He has been there for eight years, arriving at the invitation of the patron and landowner, Bernard, Baron de Floures, of Champton House. Daniel’s previous post was curate at a smart central London parish, where he got to know the de Floures family through his brother Theo, an up-and-coming actor and socialite. Audrey Clement, his widowed mother, lives with him at the Rectory on the estate. He has two dachshunds, Cosmo and Hilda. The story begins with Daniel announcing from the pulpit a plan to install a lavatory in church. This is long overdue, he thinks and so does Bernard de Floures, but the announcement goes down badly with the parish. Firm opposition comes from Mrs Harper and Mrs Dollinger of the Flower Guild, who are habitual opposers of change. There is opposition too from others who do not like the the thought of matters lavatorial in church.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":[],"product_brand":[],"product_cat":[216],"product_tag":[448,206,449,127,447,446],"class_list":{"0":"post-92425","1":"product","2":"type-product","3":"status-publish","5":"product_cat-fiction-hardback","6":"product_tag-anglican-episcopalian-churches-church-of-england","7":"product_tag-crime-mystery","8":"product_tag-dogs-as-pets","9":"product_tag-modern-contemporary-fiction-post-c-1945","10":"product_tag-religious-spiritual-fiction","11":"product_tag-second-world-war-fiction","12":"pa_book_author-coles-richard","13":"pa_cover-hardback","14":"pa_dewey-823-92-edition23","15":"pa_edition-hardback-original","16":"pa_imprint-weidenfeld-nicolson","17":"pa_language-english","18":"pa_pages-8406","19":"pa_publisher-weidenfeld-nicolson","20":"pa_readership-general-trade-code-k","22":"first","23":"instock","24":"taxable","25":"shipping-taxable","26":"purchasable","27":"product-type-simple"},"yoast_head":"\n
Murder Before Evensong<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"THE FIRST NOVEL IN THE REVEREND RICHARD COLES' CANON CELEMENT MYSTERY SERIES'Britain's favourite vicar might be hanging up the dog collar, but in Murder Before Evensong he proves to be the unlikely heir to Barbara Pym'DAILY TELEGRAPH'I've been waiting for a novel with vicars, rude old ladies, murder and sausage dogs ... et voila!'DAWN FRENCH'Coles does a wonderful job of bringing his congregation to life... He has been there for eight years, living at the Rectory alongside his widowed mother - opinionated, fearless, ever-so-slightly annoying Audrey - and his two dachshunds, Cosmo and Hilda.When Daniel announces a plan to install a lavatory in church, the parish is suddenly (and unexpectedly) divided: as lines are drawn, long-buried secrets come dangerously close to destroying the apparent calm of the village.And then Anthony Bowness - cousin to Bernard de Floures, patron of Champton - is found dead at the back of the church, stabbed in the neck with a pair of secateurs.As the police moves in and the bodies start piling up, Daniel is the only one who can try and keep his fractured community together... and catch a killer.","breadcrumb":{"@id":"https:\/\/archwaybookshop.co.uk\/product\/9781474612630\/#breadcrumb"},"inLanguage":"en-GB","potentialAction":[{"@type":"ReadAction","target":["https:\/\/archwaybookshop.co.uk\/product\/9781474612630\/"]}]},{"@type":"BreadcrumbList","@id":"https:\/\/archwaybookshop.co.uk\/product\/9781474612630\/#breadcrumb","itemListElement":[{"@type":"ListItem","position":1,"name":"Home","item":"https:\/\/archwaybookshop.co.uk\/"},{"@type":"ListItem","position":2,"name":"Buy Books","item":"https:\/\/archwaybookshop.co.uk\/index.php\/buy-books\/"},{"@type":"ListItem","position":3,"name":"Fiction Hardback","item":"https:\/\/archwaybookshop.co.uk\/index.php\/product-category\/fiction-hardback\/"},{"@type":"ListItem","position":4,"name":"Murder Before Evensong"}]},{"@type":"WebSite","@id":"https:\/\/archwaybookshop.co.uk\/#website","url":"https:\/\/archwaybookshop.co.uk\/","name":"Archway Bookshop","description":"Axminster's Beautiful Bookshop","publisher":{"@id":"https:\/\/archwaybookshop.co.uk\/#organization"},"potentialAction":[{"@type":"SearchAction","target":{"@type":"EntryPoint","urlTemplate":"https:\/\/archwaybookshop.co.uk\/?s={search_term_string}"},"query-input":{"@type":"PropertyValueSpecification","valueRequired":true,"valueName":"search_term_string"}}],"inLanguage":"en-GB"},{"@type":"Organization","@id":"https:\/\/archwaybookshop.co.uk\/#organization","name":"Archway Bookshop","url":"https:\/\/archwaybookshop.co.uk\/","logo":{"@type":"ImageObject","inLanguage":"en-GB","@id":"https:\/\/archwaybookshop.co.uk\/#\/schema\/logo\/image\/","url":"https:\/\/archwaybookshop.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/cropped-cropped-logo_512-1.png","contentUrl":"https:\/\/archwaybookshop.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/cropped-cropped-logo_512-1.png","width":454,"height":368,"caption":"Archway Bookshop"},"image":{"@id":"https:\/\/archwaybookshop.co.uk\/#\/schema\/logo\/image\/"},"sameAs":["https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ArchwayBookshop\/","https:\/\/x.com\/Archwaybookshop","https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/archwaybookshop\/"]}]}},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/archwaybookshop.co.uk\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/product\/92425","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/archwaybookshop.co.uk\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/product"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/archwaybookshop.co.uk\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/product"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/archwaybookshop.co.uk\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=92425"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/archwaybookshop.co.uk\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=92425"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"product_brand","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/archwaybookshop.co.uk\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/product_brand?post=92425"},{"taxonomy":"product_cat","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/archwaybookshop.co.uk\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/product_cat?post=92425"},{"taxonomy":"product_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/archwaybookshop.co.uk\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/product_tag?post=92425"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
