Bookshop … we drop

Book lovers in the East Devon town of Colyton now have their own ‘virtual bookshop’ courtesy of a new drop-off service.
The service will be operated by Axminster’s Archway Bookshop in partnership with Colyton Garden Shop (pictured above), which will act as the collection point for customers who order their books by phone or email.
Archway’s owner, Simon Holmes, who himself lives in Colyton, hopes the service will appeal to those unable to get to Axminster and those who prefer to support local businesses rather than buy from an internet giant.
“Colyton Garden Shop is one of the town’s special places, and a lot of people gather there over the course of a week,” he says. “We hope people will visit to pick up a book in the same way they visit to pick up plants or enjoy a coffee stop.”
The service also ties in with the business philosophy of Colyton Garden Shop owner Sue Brown, who is in the midst of an exciting expansion plan which will see a beautifully restored barn become part of a wider retail experience. “Books tie in very well with the relaxed atmosphere of the place, and I hope soon to be able to offer a selection of gardening books via the Archway,” she says.
Simon’s promise is that he and his team can source the vast majority of books that Colyton customers find online. They can then order and pay by phone for collection close to home. Books will usually be delivered to the Garden Shop within 48 hours.
